| Amethyst, as the story goes, originated
from Bacchus, the god of wine, who grew angry at a mortal
and vowed that the next mortal to cross his path would
be eaten by tigers. At that time along came a beautiful
maiden by the name of Amethyst who was on her way to
worship the goddess Diana. Diana saw Amethyst coming
and turned her into a colorless quartz to protect her
from the tigers. Bacchus, who observed the miracle repented
and took wine and poured it over the stone of Amethyst
staining it purple. The wine did not cover the entire
stone evenly, leaving the feet and part of the legs
remaining colorless. This is why Amethyst crystals are
usually uneven in color with a colorless base. |
